Women’s Hair Loss
When we think of hair loss, we usually think of men's hair loss. However, hair loss does occur in women and can be just as traumatic, or even worse as one sign of a woman’s beauty is her hair. There are many factors that result in hair loss, but a woman’s age, her genetics, and how she treats her hair will have the biggest influences.
Your Age
Women are born with a certain amount of hair follicles, and this number of follicles does not increase, as we grow older, but rather will decrease over time. In addition, a woman will shed an average of 8-10 strands of hair a day. This is a healthy amount of hair to lose, but when this average hair loss is coupled with overprocessing, the loss becomes dramatic!
Instead of having the nice healthy hair we had when we were younger, by the time a woman reaches her 20’s, notable changes in the hair density have resulted. As she continues to age, the hair becomes thin in many places. This decrease in the hair follicles results in less hair produced, and more hair is lost from the scalp.
Your Genetics
Genetics does play a role in hair loss as well. Many people believe their hair is a direct inheritance from only one of their parents. However, this is not the case, and your hair is really a combination of both parents.
There are a few genetic conditions, which result in hair loss. In men, common name is “male pattern baldness”. However, the medical term for this is Androgenetic alopecia. Androgenetic alopecia involves the male hormone called androgen, which is responsible for regulating male puberty, and sexual development. High levels of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is one of the mitigating factors in Androgenetic alopecia. Hair loss begins in the front of the head, and eventually recedes to the back, resulting in partial or complete baldness. Androgenetic alopecia can occur in women, resulting in partial baldness.
Another condition that results in hair loss is Alopecia aereata. This condition is both sad and embarrassing to live with. Alopecia is characterized by complete loss of hair from the entire body or hair loss in patches. Alopecia is the result of a attacking the immune cells attacking and killing the hair follicles. Women suffering from Alopecia can either experience it at various times in their life or long-term.
Your Activities
Other than age and genetics, what we do to our hair also causes hair loss. The hair follicles are sensitive to the “abuses” they encounter. Overprocessing the hair can result in damage to the scalp and hair loss. For example, the use of curling irons everyday can cause hair damage. The most common way women abuse their hair is seen when the hair is chemically treated. Adding strong chemicals occurs when the hair is permed, dyed, or relaxed. If done too many times, or incorrectly, the hair and scalp can suffer extensive damage. Be careful with any chemical products that can clog the hair follicles also. Many of us have heard the “horror” stories chemically treated hair falling out in clumps!
